Balham School to host vertical planting workshop!

Balham School to host vertical planting workshop!

Joe Croft, Headteacher of Ravenstone Primary along with Transition Town Tooting’s Richard Couldrey

Ravenstone Primary School in Balham will host one of 2 workshops on vertical planting, delivered in partnership with Friends of Ravenstone and Transition Town Tooting!

Richard Couldrey, Member of Transition Town Tooting, tells us more!

“The Ravenstone event is a drop in event on Monday 22nd July, 10.30am to 3.30pm – see the full details here! The other event will be held at Tooting Community Garden on 28th July – details here.

“Both events are going to be participative and a lot of fun. Come down for an hour or the whole thing, to join in or just to see what it’s all about. At Ravenstone, we’ll be showing how to make vertical planters in the morning and looking to plant within them during the afternoon, looking at soil mixes, potting on and plants.

“The workshops are part of the London National Park City Festival which reaches right across the City. The Festival marks London becoming the world’s first National Park City with three aims: making London greener, healthier and wilder. You can check out the London National Park City Foundation here and the full Festival listings here.

“Why did the school get involved? Headteacher Joe Croft highlights that community engagement mixed with nature and wildlife fits perfectly with the school values of happy, kind, determined, honest and creative. Ravenstone’s vision of “children reaching their potential in the heart of the community” also has resonance with the project inviting the whole community of Balham and beyond into the school.

“The workshop day fits into a wider narrative of communities coming together to take action on the climate crisis. Joe spoke of the value of bringing nature into the playground, “Children are the future and understanding the natural world and growing up in a space with clean air and wildlife around them is so important for the children in our area”. This fits in perfectly with Transition Town Tooting’s aim to “make change how we live and where we live in light of climate change.”

“With that in mind, we’d like to send a warm invitation to individuals, families and friends to come and join in!”
