As Nature Intended in Balham to be free of plastic carrier bags

After 18 months of building refurbishment, As Nature Intended is to re-open its Balham shop (186-188 Balham High Road) on Thursday 4th July 2019.

And the Balham location will be the chain’s first shop which will open without plastic carrier bags. According to CEO Caroline Gooding,

“As Nature Intended has always been committed to sustainability. By stocking only paper, cotton, and jute bags from opening day, we are taking that important first step towards eliminating plastic carrier bags in all our shops so that by 2020, we will be completely free of plastic carrier bags. Likewise, we will be encouraging customers to bring their own carrier bags because the act of “reusing” has the least impact on the environment.”

As Nature Intended will also offer customers the option to buy bulk food, laundry and washing up liquid, as well as hair and body care, greatly reducing packaging and thus waste, as the customer measures out exactly what he or she needs and stores it in their own reusable container.

Commitment to the local community will also be included in the new shop’s décor – As Nature Intended has commissioned Tooting influential street artist of the Blight Society to paint a vibrant mural on one of the shop’s interior walls. The mural will have a sustainability theme and be unveiled at the preview opening event.

Nigel Morley, As Nature Intended’s Managing Director says,

“We are dedicating one entire wall [in the shop] to communicate our commitment to sustainability by showing our customers a selection of reusable products. We are very lucky to have such a talented, local artist to help bring this commitment to life in the form of a mural. It is perhaps the most exciting project I’ve been a part of in all my years in retailing.”

The new Balham As Nature Intended shop is 3,381 square feet including the back-of-the-house offices and staff rooms. It will stock over 5,000 products including 100% organic produce, chilled foods including fresh organic meat, seafood, and food to go, along with cheese, olives, charcuterie and natural remedies. The Balham shop will stock over 1500 lines new to the Balham shop, including bulk pulses, grains, and nuts, bulk laundry and washing up liquid, and bulk haircare, shower gel, and body lotion. Customers can purchase as much or as little of a bulk item as they need, thereby reducing waste.

As Nature Intended will reopen in Balham on Thursday 4th July at 9am.
