Balham’s timeless urban spa and salon has a new senior stylist – Shelana. Our editor, Rachel, was invited to undergo the scissors and write a review – but did Shelana make the cut?
In the run up to Independent Mind Body Soul’s 12th anniversary a new face has joined the team. Shelana joins Independent MBS from a very different background – she was a hairdresser working in Hammersmith in a hair replacement centre helping girls who have lost their hair through cancer treatments, alapecia or tricholtillomania (TTM – pulling out hair by way of addiction usually caused by anxiety) which we imagine can only be very different from Balham’s day to day hairdressing so Rachel agreed to go under the chop (without Shelana’s knwoledge) to see how her skills translated into IMBS and this is what she had to say:
I had my hair tied up in a knot (in particularly bad, post-swim, condition) on the top of my head although to my relief Shelana didn’t gasp or reel with horror when I unravelled it...she consulted me on what I’d like, how I usually wear my hair, how often I get it cut etc. and what she thought would work and made me feel instantly at ease.
She brushed through my hair, put it up in a twist and treated me to a thorougly relaxing neck and shoulder massage with my choice of massage oil – bliss! This was a wonderful, unexpected and very welcome touch.
She washed my hair and gave it a special nourishing Aveda treatment (£10) to combat the straw-head that I’d rocked up with *embarrassed face* and set about settling me with a hot drink. The cutting was seamless and comfortable (no “move ths way” or “sit up straight please”) and the conversation flowed easily.
I was absolutely thrilled with my cut – I think you can see from yourself from the before and after pictures (below) how much I needed Shelana’s magic scissors. I couldn’t wait to leave to show people my revived hair!
